Term Glossary

columbarium: a room or building with niches for funeral urns to be stored

Dharma: the teaching or religion of the Buddha.

Kadomatsu: New Year's Pine & Bamboo Decoration; decorations of pine, bamboo, and plum symbolize good luck. Pine represents longevity: bamboo, resiliency; and plum, new beginnings and purity. A pair of kadomatsu is often placed at either side of the entrance of one's home or business.

Shinran Shonin: founder of Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. From Zen Shin Talks by Sensei Ogui (1998): A man who brought Buddhism from monastic life to the life of ordinary people. He openly married. He asked the question, "What Buddhist teachings can be practiced with a wife and children?" He could not compromise his endless passions and desires and with his desperation he realized that he could abandon himself into infinite compassion and wisdom.
